A website owner can now hear three versions of the same pitch: improve SEO, prepare for AEO, and invest in GEO. Before buying a new workflow, ask what visible result it is supposed to improve and which product’s rules support the recommendation.
This comparison was checked against primary documentation on October 2, 2026. The terms below are working definitions for this guide. They help describe different goals; they should not be treated as three official algorithms with universal checklists.
Quick Answer
SEO concerns discoverability and performance in search. AEO usually emphasizes answering a question clearly. GEO focuses on visibility within generated answers. The practical work overlaps: make pages accessible, specific, well supported and easy to interpret. Product-specific access rules and measurement still matter.

Compare the Intended Result
| Term | Working Definition Here | Useful Question |
|---|---|---|
| SEO: Search Engine Optimization | Improving how useful pages are discovered, understood and selected in search | Which relevant searches lead people to this page? |
| AEO: Answer Engine Optimization | Making a page’s answer easy to identify and understand | Does the page answer the actual question with its necessary conditions? |
| GEO: Generative Engine Optimization | Improving a source’s visibility in generated responses | Is this page cited accurately in the particular product we are testing? |
The GEO research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues formalized a framework for studying visibility in generative-engine responses. It provides a research context for the term. A benchmark result from that work is not a promise about a current Google or ChatGPT response, and we are not presenting it as a tested result for SeoNative. GEO: Generative Engine Optimization.
What Google Actually Requires
Google says existing SEO practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not require special AI markup or new machine-readable files for those features. Supporting links must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet; meeting those conditions does not guarantee selection. Google’s AI-features guidance.
For a small publisher, the practical consequence is to fix a concrete page problem before adding an extra “AI optimization” layer. If the article’s answer is vague, its evidence is missing or its links are broken, renaming the workflow will not resolve those issues.
For example, a page titled “Does a Canonical Tag Guarantee Indexing?” should answer that question early and explain what the declaration means. An unrelated history of SEO before the answer makes the page less useful to a reader. Moving a clear answer forward is an editorial improvement; it is not a claim that a model will cite it.
Other Products Have Their Own Controls
OpenAI documents separate purposes for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot. The former supports search visibility; the latter crawls material that may be used for model training. Their controls are independent. A decision about training access should therefore not be confused with a decision about search access. OpenAI crawler documentation.
Keep a platform-specific record of which access policy you intend, who owns it and when it was checked. Do not paste a robots configuration from a generic GEO checklist into a live website without understanding which service and purpose it affects.
SeoNative has not run a controlled AI-citation experiment for this article. Its public starter guide separates WordPress, technical SEO, indexing and AI search into named sections. We can verify that organization directly. We cannot infer citation frequency or traffic from it.
Improve One Answer Without Flattening the Topic
- Write the reader’s question in one sentence. Include the product or situation if the answer depends on it.
- Give the direct answer near the beginning, followed by the condition that could change it.
- Attach the source or observed example to the claim it supports.
- Explain the next decision, with a real example or clearly labeled hypothetical example.
- Read the passage without the page title. Replace vague references such as “this setting” when the subject would be unclear.
A concise answer is useful only when it remains accurate. “Caching makes WordPress fast” omits the circumstances. “Caching can reduce repeated server work, while the page still needs sensible images and scripts” gives the reader a more useful boundary. Neither sentence needs to be repeated under five near-identical question headings.
Measure Visibility and Value Separately
| Goal | Record | Avoid Concluding |
|---|---|---|
| Search discovery | Relevant query and page performance in the chosen period | One personal search is a stable rank |
| Answer clarity | A reviewer can identify the answer, conditions and next step | Short paragraphs prove algorithmic preference |
| AI citation visibility | Product, date, exact prompt, cited URL and answer context | One citation is a durable ranking |
| Business value | Useful visits and meaningful actions, when measured | A mention necessarily produced a visit |
Google’s documentation places AI-feature traffic within the overall Web search performance reporting. That does not make an aggregate traffic change a controlled measurement of one editorial change. Google’s reporting explanation.
For an exploratory AI check, choose a small set of realistic questions before testing. Preserve the product, date and wording. Repeat the same protocol later and report the observations with their limitations. Changing the prompts until your brand appears produces a biased example.
Common Mistake
Treating a citation, a high position and a useful visit as the same outcome makes the strategy impossible to evaluate. Choose the outcome first, then collect evidence that actually measures it.
For SeoNative, the sensible starting point is a useful content set with clear sources and readable structure. Product-specific tests can be added when there is a defined question to investigate. Use our AI search starting section to keep terminology connected to practical decisions.
